Piano Practice

Seven years ago I was raised from a peaceful slumber by a terrible noise. My neighbor was learning the piano.

Soon, I discovered it was the neighbor’s four year old son at the helm. He attempted Mary Had a Little Lamb, The Itsy Bitsy Spider and, the dreadful, Row, Row, Row Your Boat . For months his inelegant renditions became my alarm clock.

This went on for years until one day, something came from that house that caused me to pause, the theme song to Super Mario Brothers. The kid next door had gotten good.

The kid still plays everyday but he’s moved on from The Birthday Song. Now, we get Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Debussy’s Clair de Lune and Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat. My alarm clock dazzles me awake and it started with a single note.
